Is Newborn Photography Safe? What Every Perth Parent Should Know

When you're in those early weeks with a brand new baby, it's natural to have questions about everything. And if you're considering a newborn photography session, one of the first things many parents ask me is: is it actually safe?

It's a great question, and one I'm always happy to answer. The short answer is yes, absolutely. But there's a longer answer worth sharing, because understanding what goes into a safe newborn session can help you feel genuinely at ease from the moment you walk through the studio door.

Experience matters more than anything

Newborn photography is a specialised skill. The peaceful, settled images you see in beautiful newborn portraits don't happen by force or by rushing. They happen through patience, gentle handling and years of experience working with tiny babies.

I've been photographing newborns for over 14 years. My approach has always been baby-led. I do gently pose babies, but I follow their lead throughout, and if a position isn't working for your baby on the day, we simply move on. There are no forced poses and no rushing.

A studio environment designed for your baby's comfort

My Joondalup studio is temperature controlled throughout every session. Newborns can't regulate their own body temperature the way adults can, so keeping the environment consistently warm and comfortable is one of the simplest and most important things I do to keep your baby settled and safe.

All surfaces, wraps and fabrics are clean and carefully prepared before each session. Sessions are never double booked, so your baby has the full studio space and my complete attention for the entire time.

Family-focused, not prop-heavy

My sessions focus on your baby and your family together, not on elaborate setups. The images I create are soft, natural and timeless, with an emphasis on connection, skin to skin moments, tiny details and the way your family looks at each other in those early days.

This approach is also inherently safer. When sessions are baby-led and focused on natural connection rather than achieving a specific posed look, babies are more settled, parents are more relaxed, and the whole experience feels easier for everyone.

You are always close by

Parents are always present during newborn sessions. You're never asked to leave the room or hand your baby over and step away. Most parents find they relax quite quickly once they see how gently and patiently the session unfolds, but you're welcome to watch every moment, ask questions as we go, and feed or settle your baby whenever needed.

Sessions run for two to four hours. We take our time, because a fed, settled baby makes for a relaxed session and beautiful images. There's no pressure to hurry.

When is the best time to book?

Newborn sessions work beautifully in the first two weeks after birth, when babies are naturally sleepier and more settled. But if your baby is already a little older, please still get in touch. I welcome babies at various stages and tailor every session to where your baby is at on the day.

The best time to book is actually before your baby arrives. I take a limited number of newborn bookings each year, and due dates are held tentatively until your baby is here. Getting in touch during your second or third trimester means your spot is secured without any stress.
