Updated: Apr 8

As a Newborn Photographer based in Perth, Melanie Williams Photography has seen many parents struggling to settle their newborn baby into a sleep routine. Newborns are often unpredictable and can be particularly challenging when it comes to bedtime!

We have compiled 10 tips to help you and your little one settle into a sleep routine that works for both of you.

1. Adopt a sleep routine

Your Newborns needs consistency to acclimate to the new environment and get used to sleeping through the night. To help your baby adjust, create a bedtime routine that you can stick with each night. This could include giving them a warm bath or massage, reading them a story and singing lullabies. Make sure to keep the lights dim and quiet when settling baby in for sleep. When your newborn gets used to a set routine, they will know that it's time for sleep and may drift off more easily. With consistency, a healthy sleep cycle can be established. It’s not easy at first but having this kind of routine will help both you and your baby get into a beneficial sleeping pattern.

2. Timing is everything

Newborn babies need plenty of sleep – usually around 16-17 hours a day! To make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night, try establishing an early bedtime routine during the day by putting them down for naps at regular intervals throughout the day. This will help ensure they get enough rest while also promoting better sleep habits.

3. Swaddle your baby

Newborns can be easily startled by movement or loud noises, and swaddling them securely in a light wrap will help to reduce these disturbances and allow them to drift off into peaceful sleep.

4. White noise can be helpful

White noise can help to mask other sounds that might wake your baby from sleep and remind them of their safe, enclosed environment in the womb. Alternatively, you could plug in a sound machine so your little one gets used to hearing it and knows it’s time for sleep.

5. Have the right equipment

Newborns need a safe sleeping environment free from loose sheets, pillows or blankets that could pose a hazard. Investing in a firm mattress for the crib or bassinet is essential, as well as making sure you have fitted sheets that are specifically designed for your baby’s bedding.

6. Rock them

Gentle rocking motions can help calm your baby and signal that it’s time to go to sleep. It also mimics the movements they felt in the womb, so it may be a soothing reminder of their pre-birth environment.

7. Avoid over-stimulation

Newborns don’t need too much stimulation before bedtime, as this can make it harder for them to settle down in the evening. Keep things simple; avoid playing active games or having loud conversations that could excite your little one and cause them difficulty when it comes time for sleep.

8. Don't give up!

When it comes to establishing a comfortable sleep routine, don't be afraid to experiment and adjust. Everyone is different—so what works for one parent and baby may not work for another. Keep practicing, adjust your routine as needed, and don't be discouraged if things don't work out right away.

9. New Parent Support

New parenthood is both exciting and daunting at the same time. Don’t be afraid to reach out for support from family and friends – or even a professional Newborn Care Specialist like Ngala ( https://www.ngala.com.au) ! Having someone to talk to about the unique challenges of parenting can make all the difference.

10. Don’t forget to take care of yourself

Newborns are demanding and it can be exhausting taking care of them around the clock! Remember to give yourself time out by asking friends, family or childcare professionals for help if needed in order to keep your energy levels up and to ensure you have time for yourself.

We hope these tips have helped you get on the road to a peaceful sleep routine with your little one!

Good Luck and Sweet Dreams.
